1-Day Sancerre & Pouilly-Fume Wine Tour & Tasting

Overview of Our 1 day Sancerre Wine Tour

Our one-day Sancerre wine tour is the perfect one-day excursions for guests staying in Paris and who are looking for a full-day in the heart of the French countryside where they can experience the charm and beauty of rural France, drink their favourite wines and meet the local people. Our one-day tours really are the perfect introduction to the world-class Sauvignon blanc wines of the Central Loire Valley as they focus on the vineyards either side of the Upper Loire Valley roughly 200km south-west of Paris. Here the predominantly limestone soils and semi-continental climate make this home to some of the finest Sauvignon blanc wines in the world, with household names such as Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé being the best known. You will also discover some rare wines from a recently created appellation known as Coteaux du Giennois and where a handful of wine-growers produce a delightful Sauvignon blanc as well as a few reds from the Pinot and Gamay grape varieties.

And red wine lovers, please do not despair, the region also produces some great pinots, especially from around Sancerre.

During your Sancerre wine tour with us you will learn, amongst many other things, all about the history of winemaking in the Sancerre and Pouilly sur Loire appellations, the different “terroirs” that produce the diversity of styles of Sauvignon blanc wines, as well as vineyard techniques such as canopy management, pruning and organic practices. And of course, we offer a very unique service as we can organise the shipment of your favourite wines from the vineyard to your very doorstep !

MORNING (Wednesday & Sunday Farmers' market in Cosne-sur-Loire)

Your wine tour with us will begin with a drive through the beautiful vine-covered slopes of the Sancerre vineyards and a stop at a local winery where you will enjoy your first wine tasting. Here you will learn about the role of Sancerre’s unique “terroirs” which, hand-in-hand with generations of savoir-faire, makes the Sauvignon blanc wines produced in the region a benchmark for the rest of the world.

A lunch stop in a local country inn where you can savour a selection of delicious regional specialities such as « whitebait » from the river Loire or the famous “Salade de Crottin de Chavignol”, a warm goats cheese salad sometimes made with pastry or served on toast, along with finely chopped bacon and fresh salad. And of course, lunch will be washed down with a glass or two of refreshingly crisp Sancerre wine.

The first part of the afternoon will be spent in the very attractive historic town of Sancerre where you will enjoy a visit to a prestigious local winemaker and learn about the history of wine-making in the region and the art of making world-class Sauvignon blanc wines. He will also explain the diversity of the terroir in the surrounding vineyards and you will be able to taste some of the different styles of Sancerre wines produced here. A must is a short historical walking tour of the town which was a former Huguenot bastion as well as enjoying a commanding view over the famous Loire river and surrounding vineyards. You will also be able to visit the excellent « Maison des Sancerre » where guests can discover the winemakers' passion for their wines, terroirs and region through a unique interpretative and entertaining tour appreciated by all ages

The region is equally renowned for its local goat's cheese so we will pay a visit to a local farm to learn how these "crottin de Chavignol" cheeses are made. A short distance away is the remarkable riverside town of la Charité-sur-Loire with its beautiful many-arched bridge spanning the river Loire.

A short drive from Sancerre is another mecca for all Sauvignon blanc lovers, Pouilly Sur Loire where a visit to a local winery and vineyards will be your opportunity to learn the art of making these much sought-after white wines. You will also discover a rare wine which is not made from the Sauvignon blanc grape but from a varietal known as the Chasselas and which is labelled and marketed as Pouilly sur Loire AOC.
